Has the desert heat gotten to you yet? Well when it does and you just don’t have the time to pack up the family for a long weekend away – take a ride up to Mt. Charleston.
It is conveniently located just 35 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Strip -this beautiful mountain area, is part of the Spring Mountain Range and Toiyabe National Forest. The temperatures during the summer months are mild- usually the high for the day is 77-82, perfect to beat the heat.
Mt. Charleston is a year-round recreation area. Summer activities include hiking, camping, and nature walks. There is lodging and food available at Mt. Charleston Lodge and Mt. Charleston Hotel. The Mt. Charleston Lodge was just sold in April to a new owner that plans to retain the lodge’s name and make minor renovations including upgrading bathrooms, replacing the draft beer system and buying new furniture.
If you like to hike there are several hiking trails – Mt. Charleston Scenic Byway, Bristlecone Trail, Trail Canyon Trail, and Mary Jane Falls Trail. Some of these trails are more difficult than others so it is advised to check the trails out before you decide which trail to explore.
Before you reach Mt. Charleston visit the Spring Mountains Visitor Center. The center is beautiful visitor center and has -many interesting creative displays! The staff is very helpful and will guide you to the right trail for your abilities.
Do you and your family or friends liking horseback riding? There is the Mount Charleston Riding Stable where you can enjoy a horse ride instead of hiking a trail.
You can always just drive up to Mt. Charleston for a nice lunch at either the Lodge or the Hotel and just walk around and take in the scenery. You will think –‘wow this is only 40 minutes from Las Vegas – have to do this more often’.
