Las Vegas Farmers Market -The Pavilion at Downtown Summerlin

Downtown Summerlin is known for many things; the fantastic array of restaurants at all prices ranges and lots of varied cuisines to choose from.  There are also many retail stores to shop in and of course the events that make Downtown Summerlin the hub of the master-plan of Summerlin.

One of the events that happens every Saturday in Downtown Summerlin is the Las Vegas Farmers Market.  The hours are 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.at the Pavilion, 1980 Festival Plaza Drive 89135.

The Las Vegas Farmers Market® features fresh fruits and vegetables from the South West, authentic hand-crafted European style breads and cakes as well as local fresh breads and pastries, blood oranges and many varieties of citrus, asparagus, beets, leaf greens, nuts, pasta, salad mix, fresh cut flowers, bedding plants, avocados, squash, pomelos, bok choy, strawberries, and more. It offers a wide selection of diverse and unusual fruits and vegetables not available through mainstream purveyors. I’m told that this farmer’s market will be the only one in the Las Vegas area where 90 percent of its produce is organic and free of pesticides.

Throughout the season, the market is supposed to host cooking demonstrations, live music, classes dedicated to ecological stewardship and tasting events. The Downtown Summerlin Farmer’s Market will continue at the same time and place each week throughout the year.

Bring your family, tell your friends and make sure to stop by and visit all the friendly farmers.

Summerlin 4th of July Parade Back in its Full Glory!

The entire Las Vegas Valley is invited to celebrate Independence Day at the 28th Annual Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade, Southern Nevada’s largest and most colorful Fourth of July parade.  My family and I get there early to get a front row view every year.  If you are attending bring plenty of water and sunscreen for everyone in your group, or even better bring your pop-up shade and stake your claim.  Stay safe from the sun and hydrated – that’s our motto.

It should be very exciting since this is the first full-scale parade since the pandemic started in 2020. This year’s parade is going to be bigger and better than ever. There are more than 70 entries, including 25 giant inflatable parade balloons, veteran and military organizations, both patriotic and pop culture-themed floats, performing groups.

This year representation from four local professional sports teams, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Las Vegas Aces, Las Vegas Aviators and, new this year, the Las Vegas Raiders — represented by a 30-foot Raiders-branded giant inflatable balloon in the shape of a football.

There is a new float this year, “The Magic of Encanto,” that will join several popular and returning patriotic-themed entries, including “A Salute to the Military,” honoring the service men and women from Nellis and Creech Air Force bases; “America Sings!” featuring the Desert Angels gospel choir; “America Standing Tall” featuring a 15-foot Miss Stars and Stripes towering high above the crowd; “A Very Vegas Birthday” with a special appearance by Elvis; and “Dancing in the Street” by the Contemporary West Dance Theatre ARTSWORK Pro.

Plus other popular performing groups include Danza Del Carrizo Native American performing group, Palo Verde High School Marching Band, Nevada Latino Arts and Culture Association; and The Swing It! Girls. Veterans and military organizations will be represented by the Marine Corps League, American Legion, Forgotten Not Gone and the Southern Nevada Military Vehicle Association.

Returning to the parade this year are fan favorites: “The Fourth Awakens,” featuring the Neon City Garrison Star Wars costuming club; “Mario Karts on Parade,” featuring Mario and Luigi; and “Frozen Fun,” featuring Elsa and Anna.

Over 2,500 people are expected to participate in the parade, plus more than 500 volunteers from dozens of local schools and community groups will assist with parade operations. Over 20,000 cubic feet of helium will be used for 25 giant inflatables.

Returning hosts include Sherry Swensk and Brian Loftus from 8NewsNow and Mercedes and JC from MIX 94.1

The parade is organized by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to the social, educational and recreational enrichment of residents. The parade is open to the public and with attendance expected to top 50,000 people, I strongly encourage you to arrive early (I know we do).

The parade begins at the corner of Hillpointe Road and Hills Center Drive in The Trails village of Summerlin. Participants travel south toward Village Center Circle, then west on Trailwood Drive. The parade ends near the corner of Trailwood Drive and Spring Gate Lane. For more information on the parade, visit www.summerlinpatrioticparade.com.

The Sun City Aliante Ukulele Club presents a concert performance by Dani Joy and Perry Stauffer

If you didn’t know, shortly after the Covid lockdown began, I began to learn to play ukulele. It’s a great little instrument and I have had a lot of fun learning it. I can play a couple dozen songs pretty well and have even found a local Ukulele club to hang out with from time to time.

Well, on Saturday, February 26th from 4:00pm – 5:30 pm ukulele artists Dani Joy and Perry Stauffer are returning to Aliante to perform after almost 2 years and tickets are only $20.

What’s that? You don’t know if you like ukulele music? For only $20 you can listen to a live 90-minute concert and find out! Personally, I love live music! (here’s a taste https://youtu.be/brdHXYwAPA8)

Formerly based in California, Dani Joy is a singer/songwriter who now lives in Oregon. Her world-influenced style is soothing and romantic, blending vintage jazz with Latin rhythms and original music. She is most noted for her crooning alto vocals and tasteful fingerpicking ukulele accompaniment.

Perry Stauffer has been a staple of the Nevada City/Grass Valley music scene in the beautiful gold country of Northern California. He enjoys recreating old time swing music with ukulele and upright bass with Dani Joy.

For tickets, call Kevin Smith at 916-847-7422

Ethel M Chocolates Factory & Cactus Garden

The Cactus Garden is open again!  Ethel M Chocolates’ breathtaking Botanical Cactus Garden is Nevada’s largest and one of the world’s most prolific collections of its kind. Based on the English landscape model of naturalistic design, the Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden features three acres of drought-tolerant ornamental, cacti, and other succulents.

Did you know that over 300 species of plants can be found on the grounds? Half are cacti and succulents largely native to the American Southwest, and the rest are desert trees and shrubs from the Southwestern United States, Australia, and South America. All of these plants were chosen both for the beauty of their floral displays and their ability to adapt to the climate of Southern Nevada.

Ethel M store, factory and gardens are located at 2 Cactus Garden Drive, Henderson, Nevada 89014.  The telephone number is 702-435-2608.  The hours are:
Sunday-Thursday from 9am–6pm
Friday and Saturday from 9am-7pm

Besides the glorious Cactus Garden, you should also visit Ethel M Chocolates factory and have a self-guided tour of the chocolate viewing aisle and see how they make their amazing chocolates. Self-guided tour and Cactus Garden are free and open year-round!

And one of my family’s favorite holiday treats starts November 5.

Go see the holiday lights from 5pm until 10 each night thru January 2.  Stroll through the three-acre cactus garden with over a million lights twinkling & making spirits bright.  I heard you can even have your photo taken with Santa!  (Walk ins are ok, but having a specific reservation eliminates standing in line to see if you can get in.)

And don’t skip a premium Holiday Chocolate tasting experience.  Sip one of the world’s best hot chocolates on (what we consider) a cold winter evening! Plus, you can buy candy boxes for friends and family!

In lieu of collecting toy and food donations this year, a $5 non-refundable donation will be required per group of 6 people when making a garden reservation. The $5 fee will be donated to Three Square Food Bank and HELP of Southern Nevada.

A show like no other, this traveling party will feature eye-catching parade floats, towering balloons, and captivating performances that have become 4th of July traditions in Summerlin. No grandstands or announcer booths this year; just a 30-minute, entertainment-packed community showcase with all the pageantry and spirit you’ve come to expect.

Entries will include professionally decorated parade floats with larger-than-life displays of birthday cakes, party hats, an undersea birthday jubilee and other dazzling patriotic celebrations; giant inflatable balloons including a 25-foot birthday cake, a 30-foot American flag and 25-foot Uncle Sam Hat; exciting performances by the Drumbots, Desert Angels gospel choir, the West Las Vegas Arts Center performance ensemble, Danza del Carrizo Native American dancers, Swing It Sisters, Guan Strong lion dancers, stilt walkers and a live DJ spinning beats through the streets.  There will also be appearances by beloved cartoon characters, community mascots, princesses and superheroes. And the parade route will be lined end-to-end with American flags

The parade is free and open to the public. Spectators are asked to follow the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidance for mask-wearing, social distancing and hand washing. Everyone is encouraged to arrive early, wear sunscreen and bring water and hand sanitizer.

International Day Of Yoga

Do you enjoy Yoga?  It seems there has been a lot of interest in yoga these days, especially during the pandemic when many people started using yoga as a way to de-stress and keep themselves in shape.

On June 21, 2021, head to the lawn at Downtown Summerlin to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.  Activates take place 7:30 – 8:30. Come and learn why so many people around the world are so into it. Be sure to bring your friends, family, yoga mat (or beach towel), and join the TruTribe for an evening of Vin/Yin with Jessica Johns & KateLynn Davenport featuring a live DJ, light refreshments, and photo ops!

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21of June as the International Day of Yoga. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.  Yoga is more than a physical activity. In the words of one of its most famous practitioners, the late B. K. S. Iyengar, “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”
