The Summerlin Annual Dog Calendar will go on Sale this month

Dressed for Haloween

Summerlin residents are in love with dogs, even if they don’t have a furry family member at this time.  One bright spot in 2020 is the annual Dog Calendar – this will be its third year in publication.

Loves the Golden Knights

Downtown Summerlin does the work on it and chooses the cute dogs seen in the calendar.  Each calendar is priced at $10 and proceeds go to The Animal Foundation – a very worthy cause. Each month will be represented by one dog and the thirteenth dog will be the cover model.  They will be photographed in different spots in Downtown Summerlin. The calendars will be available for purchase at each Downtown Summerlin Concierge. The Animal Foundation is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals in the Las Vegas Valley.

2 Big Things Happening for Las Vegas Today (and another certainly worth mentioning)

First, Clark County School District is having an online Town-hall meeting today. This is supposed to begin at 4:30 and run for an hour; it’s all about the 2020-21 school year. The public is able to ask questions in advance. For details, click this link. If you have kids enrolled in a CCSD school, I’m sure you’ll want to watch this.

Second, The Vegas Golden Knights return to training camp today and NHL play is scheduled to start August 1 to potentially October 2. The hockey on television, with six games a day available early on in the process, will be an incredible spectacle. For more details, click this link.

Notable; If you miss live theatre as much as I do, you will want to know that tonight, as well as Sunday 7/19 & Monday 7/20, the Las Vegas Little Theatre will present “The Quarantine Monologues”. It will only be presented on-line and is a collection of original monologues themed on the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on our lives. There were almost 90 submissions from all over the country and 15 monologues were selected to be performed. The list of monologues being performed as well as how to enjoy it can be found right here.

Play Time is important for kids.

Active play time is very important for kids to have in their daily routine. It helps build   imagination, physical coordination and other important developmental skills.   Here in Southern Nevada the weather is not always great for outdoor active play. There are some splash pads and fun parks that are great for some parts of the year, however, if your kids need more play time in their lives and need an option that doesn’t involve going outside, it might be time to consider an indoor play space. Not only will this enable your kids to play regardless of the weather or other outside conditions, but it can also net you some serious “cool parent” points once it’s finished. There are a lot of possibilities for how you might tackle an indoor play space, so here are a few ideas to get you started.

Climbing the Walls… Literally

There are many ways that you can add climbing options to an indoor play space. You can install climbing ropes, rock climbing wall units and yes even “trees” that are designed for climbing – your kids will have fun and burn off some of their pent-up energy. If you don’t want to go for one of these options, you could add a smaller jungle gym or similar play structure. Regardless of what sort of climbing option you choose, the key to all of this is making sure that they are securely mounted so that nothing can come loose during a play session. Some added padding on the floor is also a good idea to help absorb any impacts in case your climbers decide to jump down instead of climbing all the way.

Bounce Around

Another fun option for bringing the outdoors inside is to place a small trampoline inside the play area.  Of course; the trampoline will need to be secured and it should have netting and other protective gear installed to prevent injuries during play. The end result offers a lot of fun, though. Just make sure that you choose a trampoline unit that’s small enough to easily fit indoors but big enough that your kid can actually bounce around inside of it. Most likely you’ll want to get a 6-foot or 8-foot trampoline at most.

Bringing the Outdoors Inside

There are a number of ways that you can bring elements of the outside indoors for the play area you build. You can create an indoor “tree house” that captures the look and feel of outdoor play within an enclosed room. You could also add artificial grass in place of carpeting to give some or all of the room more of a feeling of being outside. Creative paint and lighting can make the room more fun while replicating some of the feel of playing under a bright blue sky, and adding multiple or large windows can let in some natural sunlight as well. You could even add popular outdoor options such as a sandbox to give even more ways to play; just make sure that you have a plan in place to clean up spilled sand.

Open the Imagination

You don’t have to dedicate a child’s play room to a single play option or theme. You could have multiple stations within the room including a block table, a play kitchen, car seats, an “outdoor” area and more. You could even forego some of these formal stations and simply provide ample space for play and extra storage to keep it organized. You know your kids, so design the play space that will fit them and their preferences the best.

From updating outlets for safety to adding custom construction or storage, you might need to hire a couple of professionals when designing an indoor play space. Fortunately, I have lists of electricians and other contractors that can get the job done, so feel free to reach out to me.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Fourth of July.  I’m sad to announce that this year our Summerlin Patriotic Parade, which my family almost always attends, will be seen virtually at www.summerlin.com

Hooray! Hockey is back and they plan to award the Stanley Cup!

The Nevada is now entering Phase 2 of reopening different type of businesses and parks.  This comes at the same time that the National Hockey League (NHL) announced that the Las Vegas Golden Knights are the Pacific division champions and will play in the playoffs.

The NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman declared that the regular season was complete and that the Knights lead the Pacific division by three points.  This is the second time the Knights won the division in the last three years.

Also the city of Las Vegas is in the running of 10 potential hub cities for the leagues return to play for the hockey playoffs for 24 teams.  There will be two cities named to be the hub. They will be playing without fans, however it will be televised!

The Golden Knights will be playing round-robin games with other Western Conference teams- St. Louis, Colorado and Dallas.  The Eastern Conference teams in the playoffs are Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington D.C.

In other hockey news The American Hockey League is expanding into Henderson, with the newly named Silver Knights (OK, I don’t love the name or the new logo… but I am still excited) that is owned-and-operated affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. They will begin play in the 2020–21 American Hockey League season.

So Las Vegas has become a sports town – with major league Hockey and Football, minor league Baseball and Hockey plus a Soccer team and Women’s Basketball.  We are all hoping it will be safe to watch these games in person, however for now we will be just have to be content to watch on TV.

Southern Nevada’s Longest Running Biking Event – Tour de Summerlin

Tour de Summerlin will mark the 20th year of this event making it the longest running bicycle event on Southern Nevada. This event will be held on Saturday April 25 and is made possible through the encouragement and support of the beautiful master-plan of Summerlin and the Howard Hughes Corporation.  When it was created in 2000 the object was – the most ‘rider friendly’ bicycling event in the southwest, and that same idea stuck to this mission year after year after year.

This event shows off the active lifestyle for which this area is known for with scenic backdrops that make it one of the best places to bicycle in the entire Southwest. It is a great way to see a good amount of the villages in Summerlin and if you are looking for a home to purchase in the master-plan you can get a feel of where you might want to live.  After the race contact me and we can discuss what you are looking for in a neighborhood and a home.

One of the most unique aspects of the Tour de Summerlin is the abundant amount of biking lanes that are used throughout the different routes. The #1 commitment has always been rider safety and utilizing miles and miles of biking lanes created for a ‘rider friendly’ experience. It’s also hard to beat the winning combination of Summerlin’s man-made amenities and Mother Nature.

This year’s start and finish line will again be located at beautiful Downtown Summerlin -the ultimate destination for shopping, dining and entertainment in southern Nevada. Invite your family and friends to come out and enjoy a day of shopping and dining before heading over to the finish line to cheer you on! The Tour de Summerlin is sure to create a dynamic and engaging experience for the entire community.  The Registration fee is $80.  More information and registration go to www.tourdesummerlin.com

The Tour de Summerlin will continue to offer three different ride distances: 80, 40 and 20 miles. With it being so early in the biking season (April), the sponsors believe that it’s important to maintain routes that are still challenging enough for the most serious riders, but also attainable for those riders who are looking to push themselves to a higher level or complete a long distance for the first time as the weather begins to warm. The sponsors are constantly striving to enhance and improve the ride experiences. This involves evaluating current and future road construction, possible safety issues and minimizing stoplight and stop sign constrictions.  Stay tuned for any last minute route changes by following Tour de Summerlin on Facebook and Twitter

After the race, join the activities for all the action at Downtown Summerlin’s “Wellness Festival” featuring complimentary fitness classes, entertainment, children’s activities and more!

Start Times for Tour de Summerlin
7 AM – 80 mile ride
8:15 AM – 40 mile ride

One more thing -If you are traveling from out of the area and would like to rent a bicycle for the event, we’ve got you covered. Each year I try to remember my lunar sign and then I look it up and get it wrong.  I always think I’m in the year of the Monkey; however, my birthday is in January and before the lunar New Year that year, so I was actually born in the year of the Goat, which is the eighth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Goat and Deer set off together, but they needed to cross a river. There were no boats available, so they had to swim across. The Deer couldn’t take it and gave up. Goat struggled on by himself and finally made it to the party as eighth place. That sounds like me! I hate to miss a great party!

Want to look up your sign – click here https://chinesenewyear.net/zodiac/

Caution: the Chinese New Year moves between 21 January and 20 February, so if your birthday falls between those dates you may have to look it up to check. Just google “when did lunar new year begin in xxxx”. And if you were born between January 1 & January 20, then your Chinese Zodiac animal will be the one listed for the year before you were born…
